I have had a private practice in Manhattan since 1982, where I work with adults individually and in couples both intensively and in brief psychoanalytic psychotherapy. I also treat adolescents and their families. My Ph.D. is from the Clinical Psychology Program at Columbia University (1981), and I completed postdoctoral training at the Ackerman Institute for Family Therapy (1986) and at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy (1997). In addition to my private practice, I am a member of the faculty at the Postdoctoral Program where I teach a course on working psychoanalytically with Adult Onset Trauma. My interest in working with patients who have survived massive psychic trauma began as I worked with Vietnam combat veterans and has grown to include those who have been through natural disasters and others those who have suffered individuals assaults. In my book Wounded by Reality, I describe this work in some detail. As an emigrant I am also interested in working with people who are facing cross cultural dilemmas. Whether they have come to America by choice or whether the decision was made out of necessity, immigrants find that these issues play a crucial role in their lives and in the lives of their children.

Bram Murphy, Judith
PhD

My goal as a clinical psychologist is to help people confronting difficult issues to improve the quality of their lives. These difficulties often manifest in obstacles to relationship and career fulfillment. My intention is that both individuals and couples will leave each session with a new perspective on their life and and an enhanced understanding of themselves.

I am primarily psychodynamic in orientation but tailor the treatment to each individual’s needs. We explore together their thoughts, feelings and issues in an environment based on mutual trust. I challenge people to view themselves in new ways, observing their patterns and thinking about the effects of the past.

In addition to having a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from NYU, I earned an MBA from the Yale School of Management. My expertise includes executive coaching, leadership training and managerial development. I am particularly well versed in career issues and what may be impeding career advancement.

As a psychologist and also a lawyer, I work with adults and children, often when they are having relationship problems. My office is on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and I often see college students in the area (Columbia, Barnard, ….) who are having school and life issues. At times I work with the courts as a forensic psychologist, evaluating and mediating custody disputes and visitation issues. I teach in the Graduate Psychology Dept. at John Jay College (CUNY), and write about psychological and legal issues that affect women and children. My Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology is from NYU and my J.D. in law is from UCLA. I also have Postdoctoral Certificates from NYU (in psychoanalysis) and USC (in Psychiatry and Law).
