Why is it important to see someone who is properly licensed?

A licensed clinical psychologist has had a minimum of 5 years of graduate school education in addition to a formal year internship and at least two years clinical supervision. This means that you can be sure that they have the experience and knowledge necessary to guide you through therapy. It is also required that someone be licensed for you to receive any in- or out of network insurance coverage.

What should I expect from my referral phone consultation?

If you call 1-800 POSTDOC (1-800-767-8362) and leave a voicemail or email info@postdoctoralreferralservice.com, you will be contacted by a Member of the Executive Committee who will discuss your situation and preferences. The member will locate the best psychologist for you who will contact you in a timely manner to set up your first visit.

What will the first session be like?

During the first session you will be asked questions about (both related to) your present situation and past history in order for the therapist, in collaboration with you, to develop your treatment plan.

How long do I need to be in therapy?

Therapy can take anywhere from a few months to a few years depending on the problem(s) you want to address. Ultimately, however, you determine when you want to stop your treatment.

How frequently are the therapy sessions?

The frequency of sessions may range from 1-3 times weekly. Generally, the sessions are 45 minutes for an individual, 60 minutes for a couple and 90 minutes for a family.

What if I need medication?

If you need medication, you will be referred to a psychopharmacologist who will provide a consultation. If medication is prescribed, there will be periodic follow up visits as needed.

What if I do not like my therapist?

You should address all concerns about the treatment and/or your therapist directly with your therapist. Therapists welcome an open discussion with you.
